CLUTHA FOLK GROUP RECORDINGS

REVIEW

Like the River Clyde [Clutha is an ancient word for Clyde] the influence of this Glsgow based folk band continues to flow across the landscape of Scottish folk music. Clutha continues to explore the roots of the Scottish Tradition and here to prove it is their new album of folk song at its earthy best.

REVIEWS

It is one of the mysteries of the Scottish Revival that the talents of the Clutha Group have not been more widely recognised.... Highlights of the disc for me are generally in the work of Gordeanna McCulloch who must rank as one of the best female singers in Scotland today. Listen to the dignity and pathos she contributes to "John Anderson"............. -or listen to her haunting performances of "the Banks O' Red Roses" and "The Border Widow's Lament". A feature of all the singing is the understanding the artists show of the modal settings. Incidentally, the Clutha never seek instrumental gimmickry and project a straight-forwardly effective Ceilidh Band sound which is thoroughly enjoyable.

The whole record has an air of complete authenticity; in all some 46 minutes of folk song treasure by the Clutha Group

REVIEW

The 13 tracks feature a mixture of song and dance tunes from five people who in recent times have won many accolades for their performance of Scottish Songs. The disc has a basic feeling of artist enjoyment........ A special point should be made of listening to the vocal work of Gordeanna McCulloch......... her voice blending with vocals from three of the group is splendid.

REVIEWS

Scots Ballads, Songs and Dance Tunes and the Bonnie Mill Dams provide good examples of their [Clutha's] considerable instrumental and vocal excellence........... Erlend Voy and Ronnie Alexander are good singers and Gordeanna McCulloch is a really outstanding one.

Her command of her chosen Art Form is staggering....... I feel that this is a great leap forward for revival singing.

                                                                               Folk News

The Clutha are one of our more intelligent folk groups and their latest LP....... is typical of their enterprise. Here they breathe life into a number of Scottish Ballads..... and their sound has been enriched by the sound of chamber pipes. Gordeanna McCulloch is in great voice.

Accompanied still by her fellow members of Clutha, Gordeanna McCulloch with this album firmly establishes her high reputation in Scots Folk Music

                                                                                    Folk Review

One of the many glories of that fine traditional Glasgow group, the Clutha...... is their girl singer Gordeanna McCulloch. She has one of those beautiful big voices perfect for a great ballad..... but she can sing smaller and simpler stuff too. Accompaniments by members of the group are discreet and appropriate.... The album's main recommendation though, is that Gordeanna McCulloch is just one of the best singers around.
